“Garden design is a natural evolution
of my love of plants and in-depth knowledge of gardening, stemming from childhood
and developing through nearly 10 years professional experience. Beginning my career with a couple
of small contractors, I was quickly appointed Head of Gardens at Anthony de
Grey Gardens in London, responsible for all aspects of the installation of
new gardens and the maintenance of existing ones, ranging from developing
planting schemes to supervising hardscaping contractors on site. Many of these
gardens are now fully mature and when
the opportunity arises to visit them, it is always fascinating to see the
"picture in my head" realised. Design work began from trying to
make the highly-decorative, two-dimensional plans of many designers a three-dimensional
reality. All too frequently paper plans would in fact, be ergonomically unsound,
ignore either soil conditions or aspect and planting schemes "safe"
- dare I say boring. My experience of working in London
obviously gave me much experience of creating seasonal, long-term or purely
decorative, containerised planting. I was lucky to have a wide variety of
corporate and private clients ensuring that my imagination was always stretched
to come up with innovative ideas, ensuring that nothing I touched ever resembled
a pub window box! In 1996, following my first Chelsea,
I went freelance and haven't looked back since! Pianti Donna was conceived as a
vehicle to cover my work as a plantswoman, artist and designer. On
the following pages you will find a small selection of my work, from a simple
window box to a slice of Tuscan hillside.
